In some varieties the yellow or white variegation takes up more leaf area than the green background. The easiest one to grow is the species Scindapsus aureus. It can be treated as a trailer or climber, reaching six feet or more under good conditions. The leaves are similar to but more colourful than Philodendron scandens, the Sweetheart Plant. The glossy green leaves are splashed with yellow and the varieties of the basic species are even more colourful but are also more difficult to grow. Golden Queen is more yellow than green, and Marble Queen is near white. Tricolor leaves are a mixture of dark green, pale green, yellow and pale cream.

Secrets of Success And Special Problems
Temperature: Average warmth, minimum 50-55 F in winter. Light: Well lit but sunless spot. Variegation will fade in poor light. Water: Water liberally from spring to autumn, let compost dry out slightly between waterings. Water sparingly in winter. Air Humidity: Mist leaves frequently. Repotting: Repot, if necessary in spring. Propagation: Take stem cuttings in spring or summer. Keep compost rather dry and leave in dark until rooted. Yellowing and Falling Leaves: The cause is overwatering especially in winter. Scindapsus cannot survive in waterlogged soil. Brown and Shrivelled Leaf Tips: The air is too dry, mist the leaves regularly. Brown Leaf Edges; Brown Spots On Leaf Surface: The cause is underwatering during the growing season. The surface of compost should become dry between waterings but root ball must not be allowed to dry out. Curled Limp Leaves: The cause is cold air damage. Scindapsus is extremely sensitive to a sudden drop in temperature below 50 F.
