Shade Gardens
The new shade garden I am working on gets a bit of sunlight in one corner and the bed for the most part is total shade. This new project I am undertaking is due to the loss of lower limbs on my Colorado Spruce. As you can see from the picture below the beautiful tree was planted in 1989 and flourished to a gorgeous size and shape by 1998. Although the tag accompanying the tree indicated it was an Intense Colorado Blue Spruce, of the dwarf series the growth rate indicates it is not a dwarf rather a full size tree.
The beautiful tree suffered a setback last year when Cytospora and Needlecast struck the bottom branches and was rapidly moving upward. An arborist explained the situation. The needlecast combined with the Cytospora Canker created a twofold problem. Obviously the lower branches required removal however I adored the tree in its natural state but learning about disease and problematic branch discoloration I had only one choice and the bottom branches were removed.
