Annuals - Pansies / Viola
Pansy, Pansy Violet, Pansies are derived from the Viola family. Pansies are usually taller than Viola and the flowers are rounder than Violas. Pansies are usually blotched and the colors available are staggering. Pansy colors include white, yellow, orange, pink, red, purple, blue and brown. The image below is a Faced Pansy which has a dark mask like appearance at the center of the flower.
Pansies will grow well in sun or partial shade and attain a height of approximately six to nine inches. The proper name of this plant is Viola wittrockiana.
Viola is a perennial and the most common name you will hear for this plant is 'Johnny Jump-Up'. Violas thrive in sun or partial shade and attain a height of four to eight inches. The image below depicts the Johnny Jump Up in my garden which is delightful as the flower pops up in my garden each year.
Violas are striking in their appearance with a velvety look to the flower. Johnny Jump Up is deep purple, blue and yellow. This is known as a tricolor Viola. Violas are biennials. Biennials are plants that bloom every second year. Violas may be planted as annuals however they belong to the perennial family.
