Annuals - Snapdragons / Antirrhinum

Antirrhinum is the proper name for Snapdragons. This annual attains a height of approximately two to three feet. Snapdragons are available in white, yellow, orange, pink, red, blue and purple.

These tubular flowers open and close when you squeeze the bloom and there are several varieties available to the gardener. Snapdragons are available in single, double and semi-double blooms. Snapdragons require a sunny area with well drained soil.

Snapdragons

Antirrhinum is a welcome sight in any garden as they have been planted for years by our parents and grandparents. Each year I purchase at least one large plant as they are reminiscent of my childhood wherein I constantly played with their blooms by opening and closing the mouth of the dragon. The common name Snapdragon was coined as it was thought the plant resembled a dragon with a snapping mouth.
