Shrubs - Burning Bush - Euonymus alata "Compactus"

The Burning Bush (Euonymus alata "Compactus") is a striking shrub with dark green leaves through the summer that turn to a vibrant red in fall. The Burning Bush is amazing in Autumn and provides a beautiful specimen to any garden setting. The image below depicts the bush during the summer months and the small image containing red leaves is an accurate representation of the fall leaf color of the Burning Bush.

Burning Bush

Although the Burning Bush will tolerate some shade it is advisable to plant in full sun to attain a deep red color for the fall and make certain the soil is well drained.

Burning Bush

The Compact Burning Bush attains a height of six to ten feet and the growth rate is moderate. You may leave the shrub unpruned or prune once or twice a season. I keep it pruned because of space issues and I think pruning the Burning Bush provides a well manicured look.

Burning Bush

The Burning Bush is hardy to zone 4 and is a deciduous shrub. The orange to red colored fruit produced by the Burning Bush is very pretty and the Burning Bush withstands acidic or alkaline soils.

Burning Bush

The corky ridges on flat, horizontal branches make this an interesting deciduous winter plant. Another benefit of planting the Burning Bush is that it grows very dense and can be pruned to a perfect globe. The Burning Bush looks phenomenal year round without problem areas as there are no significant pest problems. I highly recommend the Burning Bush because it is truly a maintenance free flowering shrub.
