Shrubs - Daphne burkwoodii 'Carol Mackie'

This is one of my all time favorite shrubs the Daphne burkwoodii 'Carol Mackie'. The variegated foliage and pink blooms create an outstanding specimen. The shrub attains a height of approximately four feet and spreads approximately three feet. The Daphne attracts Hummingbirds, is fragrant and has an upright growth. It is very neat and arranged when mature and the combination of variegated leaves and pink flowers creates an absolutely stunning shrub which I highly recommend for every gardener.

Daphne Carol Mackie

The Carol Mackie Daphne has small fragrant pink blooms in spring and the wonderful shrub is covered with variegated leaves. Some years you get a second bloom in the fall. The Daphne is a deciduous shrub and can be grown to zone 6 although some people have luck in zone 5. Carol Mackie Daphne requires well drained soil. Do not disturb the roots of the Daphne and avoid any type of radical pruning.

Daphne Carol Mackie

Sadly for no apparent reason the Daphne can die and although it thrives for many years you will notice browning of the branches and then complete withering of the entire shrub. When this occurs I always purchase another because the Carol Mackie Daphne has far too many attributes to discard from a garden setting. The beautiful upright branches hold the variegated leaves in a tidy and organized manner, there is a prolific spring bloom of pink flowers which literally cloth the shrub in color and during the summer months it is an interesting accent shrub.
