Shrubs - Evergreens

Have you ever noticed landscaping which is appealing during the summer and winter months? The wow factor during the winter months is achieved by strategically placing big, medium and small Evergreens throughout your property. Of course our flowering trees and shrubs are magnificent during their bloom period but the deciduous nature of these specimens lends a bare and stark look to your garden.

Evergreens

Evergreens fill in the gaps and provide beautiful greenery throughout the entire year. They can be utilized for privacy as depicted in the image below. Without these Cedars at the back of my property the people in the house behind me would sit on their porch and stare into my backyard. They would be deprived of quiet time spent on their porch and I could not achieve a rural look without these Evergreens. They are left untrimmed and grow rapidly as Cedar Trees are perfect for privacy.

Evergreens

Evergreens look lovely when pruned and choosing various heights adds more interest to your landscaping theme. Evergreens can provide shade and exude a cooling atmosphere when blended with patio or concrete areas.

Evergreens

The beauty of evergreens is their diversity. Even in my rock garden I have a creeping evergreen Abies balsamea 'Nana' which adds year round interest to the rockery. It has grown so well over the years and is a groundcover evergreen which is very tough and resilient to harsh winters, extreme heat and dry conditions. I highly recommend this evergreen.

Evergreens

Years ago I decided to plant different evergreens at the front of the house and chose an Alberta Spruce which is clipped into a spiral shape, Wichita Blue Juniper, Green Velvet Boxwood, Japanese Yew and a dwarf Colorado Intense Blue Spruce.

Evergreens

The evergreens at the side of the house range in size from approximately three feet to over twenty feet. In my opinion the landscape is greatly enhanced with evergreens as the perennials, annuals and full leaved species provide a full and elegant look. During the winter months the property remains elegant as the evergreens provide a rather stately look. The property is never void of color or texture.

Evergreens

The entrance to my yard is enhanced by one evergreen which is an Alberta Spruce pruned into a poodle-shape. It is important to balance your gardens with evergreens and use them throughout your gardens because evergreens are available in a variety of colors, sizes, shapes and textures.
