Summary of Hydrangeas at a Glance

For simplicity I will specify Hydrangeas as pink, blue or white. This will enable the viewer to determine which plant is best for their location and eliminate any confusion regarding pruning, color, etc.

Plant Zone:

White Hydrangea Hardy to zone 3
Pink/Blue Hydrangea: Hardy to zone 4

Pruning:

White: Prune back to approximately six inches in fall or spring
Pink/Blue: Do Not Prune Back

Color:

For blue Hydrangeas apply aluminum sulfate
For pink Hydrangeas absence of aluminum, add lime and fertilizer with high levels of phosphorous

Shrub:

Hydrangeas are a deciduous shrub

Exposure:

Ideal is facing north or east deeper shade reduces bloom size

Soil:

Acidic, apply acidifier as directed on label, well drained and keep the plant moist during dry periods

Types:

Small, Medium, Large and Climbing

Shapes:

Mophead which is big and round, conical which is cone shaped and Lace-Cap which is flat

Uses:

Blooms may be dried and arranged for indoor use, spray painted or left as a dramatic backdrop for snow
