Crocus
Crocus is a bulb recognizable to every person passing your home. The colors available are white, yellow, orange, purple, lavender and blue. The flowering period for Crocus is from March until April. Crocus bulbs are a wonderful addition to rockeries, under trees, in flower beds and for border plants.
Crocus will thrive in sun or light shade and prefers well drained soil. Plant your Crocus bulbs in September or October. Plant the bulbs to a depth of three inches and space approximately four inches apart. You may divide Crocus when the plant is overcrowding and this procedure is performed in the fall.
Crocus is shaped like a goblet, the growth is upright and the bulb has six petals. The leaves are sometimes two toned with a white stripe coursing through the middle of the leaf. The leaf itself is somewhat like grass in appearance. When Crocus is fully opened it is shaped like a cup.
There are four groups of Crocus. The spring flowering Crocus blooms in April and is available in a wide range of colors. The spring flowering Chrysanthus variety blooms in March and is usually seen in yellow. The Crocus Dutch Hybrids bloom in April and are usually available in blue, purple and white. The fall flowering Crocus blooms in September and is available in a wide range of color choices.
